5 Signs Your Chimney Needs Attention Before Next Winter

May 15, 2026

Your chimney works hard all winter — and by spring, it's earned a check-up. Here are five signs that your chimney needs some attention before you light the first fire of next season.

1. You Can't Remember Your Last Sweep

If you're scratching your head trying to remember when the chimney was last swept, it's overdue. The recommendation is at least once a year for any fuel type — and more often if you burn wood regularly.

2. Smoke Comes Back Into the Room

If smoke isn't drawing up the chimney properly, there could be a partial blockage — anything from a bird's nest to a build-up of creosote. This is a safety issue that needs sorting sooner rather than later.

3. There's a Strange Smell

A musty or acrid smell coming from your fireplace (especially in warm weather) usually means there's soot or creosote residue in the flue. The heat makes it more pungent. A good sweep will sort that out.

4. You Can See Staining on the Chimney Breast

Dark stains appearing on the wall around your fireplace or on the chimney breast upstairs can indicate that tar or moisture is seeping through the flue lining. This needs investigating — it could mean the liner is cracked or deteriorating.

5. Birds or Debris Are Falling Into the Fireplace

If you're finding twigs, feathers, or other debris in your grate, something's got into your chimney. Birds (especially jackdaws) love nesting in chimneys. A sweep will clear the blockage, and we can advise on fitting a bird guard to prevent it happening again.

Don't Leave It Until Autumn
