What we see in Thetford homes

Thetford is two towns for a sweep. The old centre and the forest villages round it, Barnham, Euston, Elveden, Croxton, are flint and brick cottages with big open fires and chimneys that have had a hundred years of use. The estates built in the sixties and seventies for the London overspill were designed around gas and electric, so when we get a call there it is usually a stove somebody fitted later, either into a boxed-in fireplace or on a twin-wall flue up the outside wall.

The other Thetford thing is the forest. A lot of people here burn wood they have found or been given locally, and a fair bit of it goes on the fire before it is dry.

Getting to you

From Great Barton it is the A134 straight up through Ixworth and Barnham, about 20 minutes, so Thetford is one of the easier towns for us to reach. Outside October to December we can usually give you a date the same week.

What a sweep in Thetford costs

£75 upwards for a standard sweep with the insurance certificate, price agreed before we start. If there is a nest to clear, that is more work and we tell you the figure before touching it.

Questions we get asked in Thetford

Our house on the estate never had a chimney. The previous owner fitted a stove with a steel flue up the outside wall. Do you sweep those?

Yes, and it needs it. A twin-wall flue collects the same deposits as a brick chimney. We sweep it from inside through the stove, check the joints and the cap, and give you the certificate.

We burn wood from around the forest. Is that a problem?

Only if it is wet. Freshly cut wood is roughly half water; it needs a year or two stacked and covered to get under 20 per cent, which is where a stove burns clean. Wet wood is what blackens the glass and coats the flue in tar. We can check your logs with a moisture meter when we visit.

There are jackdaws in our chimney every spring in Barnham. Can you clear it and stop them coming back?

Yes. We clear the nest, sweep the flue properly afterwards because a nest leaves a lot behind, and fit a bird guard to the pot so you do not have the same job next year. Nest clearing is priced on what we find, agreed first.
