Our insurer says our thatched cottage near Redgrave must be swept twice a year. Is that right?
It is a common condition on thatch policies, and it is sensible. Under thatch the risk is heat from the flue passing into the roof, so a clean flue and a sound lining matter more than in an ordinary house. We are Thatch Advice Centre approved; we sweep, check the pot height and lining, and give you the certificate your insurer wants on file.
We burn coal and wood in a multi-fuel stove. How often does it need sweeping?
HETAS guidance is once a year for smokeless fuel, twice for coal, and quarterly for wood when the stove is in regular use. Mixed burning sits at the wood end of that. We will tell you where yours falls after we see what comes out.
