What Happens During a Professional Chimney Sweep?
May 15, 2026
If you've never had your chimney swept — or it's been a while — you might be wondering what's actually involved. Here's a step-by-step look at what happens when The Good Sweep visits your home.
Before We Arrive
We'll confirm your appointment time and send a reminder. All we ask is that you clear the area around your fireplace or stove — move any ornaments, fire guards, or furniture a couple of feet back. We'll handle the rest.
Setting Up
The first thing we do is lay down heavy-duty dust sheets around your fireplace. We use a professional HEPA-filtered vacuum that runs throughout the sweep to catch any loose soot before it can escape into the room. Your carpets and furniture are fully protected.
The Sweep Itself
Using professional-grade rods and brushes, we work methodically through the full length of the flue — from the fireplace opening right up to the chimney pot. Different flues need different approaches: a lined flue for a wood burner is swept differently from an open brick flue.
The sweep removes: - Soot — the powdery residue from burning - Creosote — the tarry, potentially flammable build-up from wood burning - Blockages — bird nests, leaves, or debris that may have fallen in
The Inspection
While we're sweeping, we're also inspecting. We check for: - Cracks or damage to the flue liner - Signs of moisture ingress - The condition of the fire back and throat plate - Whether a bird guard or cowl is fitted (and whether it should be)
If we spot anything that needs attention, we'll explain it clearly and advise on next steps — no hard sell, just honest advice.
The Certificate
Once the sweep is complete, we issue an official chimney sweep certificate on the spot. This is accepted by all major home insurance companies and is essential for landlords and holiday let owners. We can email a digital copy too.
How Long Does It Take?
A standard sweep usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the flue type and condition. If there's a stubborn blockage or heavy creosote build-up, it may take a little longer.
Clean and Tidy
We pride ourselves on leaving your home cleaner than we found it. All soot and debris is bagged and removed, dust sheets are folded away, and everything goes back where it was.
The Good Sweep covers all of East Anglia — we're HETAS qualified, members of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps, and approved by the Thatch Advice Centre.
