Recent Work in the Cambridge Area

We regularly visit homes across Cambridge and nearby villages including Cherry Hinton, Girton, Histon, Fulbourn, and Great Shelford. Common jobs include annual wood burner sweeps, pre-winter fireplace checks, and CCTV inspections for properties with older or unlined chimneys.

What we see in Cambridge homes

Cambridge is the western edge of our 30 miles. The east of the city and the villages between it and Newmarket are our regular ground; the north side, Histon, Girton, Waterbeach, is inside range too, and if you are further west than that, ring with the postcode and we will tell you honestly. That side is Victorian and Edwardian terraces, Romsey, Mill Road, Cherry Hinton, Chesterton, nearly all with the original chimneys and a great many with a wood burner fitted into a fireplace built for coal. Out at Fulbourn, Bottisham and the Swaffhams it is older village houses and fen-edge cottages with wider flues.

The thing Cambridge asks us about more than anywhere else is smoke control, because much of the city sits inside a smoke control area.

Getting to you

The east side of Cambridge is about 45 minutes from Great Barton straight down the A14, so we group Cambridge jobs with Newmarket ones and come across a day at a time. Give us a couple of possible days and we will find one.

What a sweep in Cambridge costs

From £75 with the insurance certificate, confirmed before we start. There is no extra for the distance; if a job is inside our range it is priced like any other.

Questions we get asked in Cambridge

We are in a smoke control area in Cambridge. Can we still use our wood burner?

Yes, if the stove is a Defra exempt appliance and you burn an authorised fuel or Ready to Burn dry wood. Check your postcode on the council website and the appliance on the Defra list. We are not the enforcement body, but we can tell you on the day whether the deposits in your flue look like dry wood or like wet or unauthorised fuel.

Our terrace in Romsey has two chimneys and we only use one. Does the unused flue need sweeping?

Not if it has never been used since you moved in and it is capped and ventilated at the top and bottom. If you are thinking of opening it up for a fire or stove, it needs a sweep and a proper look first, because you do not know what the last fifty years left in it.

Do you come into the city or only the villages?

Yes to the city, with the east and north sides nearest for us: Romsey, Cherry Hinton, Chesterton, Histon, Girton, Waterbeach. Further west and south we are at the edge of our 30 miles, so ring with the postcode and we will say yes or no before you book rather than turn up late.
